These homemade BBQ baked beans are smoky, sweet, and tangy, with crispy bacon and tender beans in a rich, sticky sauce. Perfect for cookouts, potlucks, or a comforting side dish any night of the week.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 slices thick-cut bacon, chopped
  • 1 medium yellow onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 4 cups cooked navy beans (or 2 cans, drained and rinsed)
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • ½ cup packed brown sugar (light or dark)
  • ¼ cup molasses
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 325°F (163°C). Cook bacon in a large Dutch oven over medium heat until crispy, about 8-10 minutes. Transfer bacon to a paper towel-lined plate; leave 2 tablespoons bacon fat in pot.
  2. Add diced onion to pot with bacon fat. Cook over medium heat until soft and translucent, about 5 minutes. Add minced garlic and cook 30 seconds until fragrant.
  3. In a small bowl, whisk together ketchup, brown sugar, molasses, apple cider vinegar, yellow mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and smoked paprika. Pour into pot with onions; simmer 2 minutes until thick and glossy.
  4. Gently fold in cooked navy beans and half the crispy bacon. Stir until evenly coated.
  5. Cover pot with lid or foil and bake 30 minutes. Remove lid, stir beans, and bake uncovered 15-20 minutes more until sauce is syrupy and coats the back of a spoon.
  6. Sprinkle remaining crispy bacon over beans just before serving. Let rest 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

Render bacon slowly for best crispiness. Save half the bacon for topping to keep it crunchy. For vegetarian version, skip bacon, use 2 tbsp olive oil, and add ½ tsp liquid smoke. Beans taste even better the next day as flavors deepen.
