A light and cozy sweet potato casserole with a crunchy pecan crumble topping. Perfect for potlucks, holiday dinners, or a comforting weeknight side dish.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 pounds sweet potatoes (about 4–5 medium), peeled and cubed
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup milk (any kind)
  • 1 cup pecans, chopped
  • 1/3 cup all-purpose flour (or oat flour for gluten-free)
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 pinch salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Place peeled and cubed sweet potatoes in a large pot, cover with cold water by 1 inch, add a pinch of salt. Bring to a boil, then reduce to medium and simmer 15-20 minutes until fork-tender. Drain well.
  3. Return drained sweet potatoes to pot or a large bowl. Mash until smooth (leave a few lumps if desired). Let cool about 5 minutes.
  4. Add softened butter, brown sugar, eggs, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and milk to the mashed sweet potatoes. Stir until well combined.
  5. Spread the sweet potato mixture evenly in the prepared baking dish.
  6. In a medium bowl, combine chopped pecans, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Add cold butter cubes. Use fingers, pastry cutter, or forks to work butter into dry ingredients until mixture resembles coarse crumbs with some larger pecan pieces.
  7. Sprinkle the pecan crumble evenly over the sweet potato mixture. Do not press down.
  8. Bake for 30-35 minutes, until crumble is golden brown and edges are bubbly.
  9. Let cool for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

Toast pecans in a dry skillet for 3-5 minutes before chopping for best flavor. Keep butter cold for crumble. Let casserole rest 10 minutes before serving. Can be assembled up to 24 hours ahead (refrigerate, add 10 minutes to bake time).
