A quick and flavorful cranberry orange sauce with a spicy twist of fresh ginger, perfect for holidays and make-ahead preparation.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 ounces (340 grams) fresh cranberries
  • 1 cup (200 grams) granulated sugar
  • 1 cup (240 ml) fresh orange juice
  • Zest from 1 medium orange
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, finely grated
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) water
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Rinse the fresh cranberries under cold water and pick out any soft or damaged berries. Zest the orange with a microplane, then juice it until you have 1 cup (240 ml). Peel and finely grate about 1 tablespoon of fresh ginger.
  2. In a medium saucepan, add the orange juice, water, and granulated sugar. Stir gently over medium heat until the sugar dissolves completely, about 3 to 5 minutes. Keep the mixture warm but not boiling.
  3. Add the cranberries, grated ginger, orange zest, cinnamon (if using), and a pinch of salt. Stir to combine evenly.
  4. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, then reduce heat to low and simmer uncovered for 10 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cranberries pop and the sauce thickens but remains slightly chunky.
  5. Remove from heat and let the sauce cool to room temperature. Transfer to a clean container with a lid and refrigerate. The sauce will thicken further as it cools and flavors meld.

Notes

If sauce is too thick, stir in a splash of water or orange juice before serving. Adjust sweetness by adding honey or maple syrup if desired. Fresh ginger should be finely grated for best flavor. Simmer gently to avoid mushy texture. Sauce tastes better after sitting overnight.
