Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 can (15 oz / 425 g) black beans, rinsed and drained
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 cup (8 fl oz / 240 ml) sour cream
  • 1 cup (8 oz / 240 g) cream cheese, softened
  • 1 packet taco seasoning or homemade blend
  • 2 ripe avocados, peeled and pitted
  • 1 tablespoon lime juice
  • 1/4 cup (1.4 oz / 40 g) finely chopped red onion
  • 1 small jalapeño, seeded and minced (optional)
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 cup (4 oz / 120 g) shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup (5.3 oz / 150 g) chopped tomatoes or pico de gallo
  • 1/2 cup (1.8 oz / 50 g) sliced black olives
  • 1/2 cup (2.1 oz / 60 g) chopped green onions
  • Mini tortilla chips or sturdy crackers for scooping
  • Extra cilantro leaves or edible flowers for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Bean Layer (10 minutes): In a bowl, mash the black beans slightly with a fork—leave some texture for bite. Stir in cumin, chili powder, salt, and pepper. Taste and adjust seasoning. Spread this mixture evenly at the bottom of your serving dish.
  2. Mix the Creamy Layer (5 minutes): In another bowl, beat together softened cream cheese and sour cream until smooth. Add taco seasoning and mix well. Spread this layer gently over the bean layer, making sure not to disturb the beans beneath.
  3. Make the Guacamole Tombstones (10 minutes): Mash avocados with lime juice until creamy but still slightly chunky. Stir in red onion, jalapeño (if using), and salt. Taste to balance flavors. Using a small cookie cutter shaped like tombstones, press into the guacamole spread on parchment paper and transfer carefully on top of the creamy layer. If you don’t have a cutter, slice the guac into small rectangles or ovals with a knife.
  4. Add Cheese and Veggies (5 minutes): Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese on top, followed by chopped tomatoes or pico de gallo, sliced black olives, and green onions.
  5. Final Touches (2 minutes): Garnish with cilantro leaves or edible flowers if desired. Chill the dip for at least 30 minutes before serving to let the flavors meld and layers firm up.

Notes

Use a gentle hand when layering to keep layers distinct. Prepare all layers except guacamole tombstones ahead of time and add guacamole just before serving for freshness. Lime juice prevents guacamole browning. For gluten-free, use gluten-free tortilla chips. For dairy-free, substitute sour cream and cream cheese with coconut yogurt and vegan cream cheese alternatives.
