Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (226g) unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled
  • 2 cups (400g) granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs, room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup (120g) all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup (60g) unsweetened cocoa powder (preferably Dutch-process)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 cup (150g) Nutella (or chocolate-hazelnut spread), room temperature
  • 2–3 tablespoons powdered sugar (optional, for thickening Nutella)
  • Small candy spiders or plastic spider rings (optional, for garnish)
  • Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 9×13-inch baking pan with parchment paper, leaving a 2-inch overhang on the long sides. Lightly spray with non-stick spray.
  2. In a large microwave-safe bowl, melt the butter in 30-second bursts until just melted. Let cool for 2 minutes.
  3. Whisk the sugar into the melted butter until well combined. Add eggs one at a time, whisking well after each. Stir in vanilla extract.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, salt, and baking powder.
  5. Pour dry ingredients into wet ingredients and fold gently with a rubber spatula until just combined. Do not overmix.
  6. Pour batter into prepared pan and spread evenly. Bake for 20 minutes. The brownies should be set around the edges but still slightly jiggly in the center.
  7. While brownies bake, spoon Nutella into a small piping bag or zip-top bag. Snip a tiny corner off the bag.
  8. Remove brownies from oven. Immediately pipe concentric circles of Nutella over the top, starting from the center and working outward, spacing circles about 1 inch apart.
  9. Using a toothpick or skewer, start at the center and drag a line outward through the circles to the edge. Repeat every inch around the brownie to create a spiderweb pattern.
  10. Return pan to oven and bake for another 10-15 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out with a few moist crumbs. Total bake time: 30-35 minutes.
  11. Cool completely in the pan on a cooling rack for at least 1 hour.
  12. Lift brownies out using parchment handles. Cut into squares with a sharp knife, wiping clean between cuts. Garnish with candy spiders and dust with powdered sugar if desired.

Notes

The key to the web is timing: add Nutella after 20 minutes of baking when the brownie is set around the edges but still jiggly in the center. Keep Nutella at room temperature; if too thin, stir in powdered sugar. For clean cuts, cool completely and wipe knife between slices.
